Jonathan Update

This is an update on Jonathan Alan Miller: his quest for justice, his frame of mind, and his relationship with God and others.

On February 20, 2003, Jon’s attorney filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court requesting a review of his case. On April 28th, the request was declined. I believe the court only accepted one request out of 159. I guess it is not surprising that this court would decline to hear arguments in a juvenile murder case just when the DC sniper case is getting underway. The authorities intend to seek the death penalty for that seventeen-year-old and would not do anything to push that case in either direction. This, however, was the end of the road for Jon’s legal rights.

Jonathan is now entirely at the mercy of the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole. They are expected to review Jonathan’s first possibility of parole in another nine and a half years. He has now been moved to Phillips State Prison in Buford, Georgia to serve out his life sentence.

Jon looks forward to every day, believing you only get one chance to live it, and so he wants to get the most out of each one. He believes he should be punished, as he is responsible for Joshua’s death regardless of his lack of intent or knowledge of this possibility. A life sentence, however, is completely beyond reasonable punishment. He has asked everyone to go on with their lives and not put anything on hold because of his situation.
