A Pearl Of Great Price!
by Diane LaFlamme
What do you do when you are 74-years-old, have multiple health problems, and are faced with the very real possibility of death? In fact, the doctor comes to you and asks you if you want to be resuscitated when the end comes. If you are like most people that age, the will to fight for your life and to endure a tremendous amount of pain in the process, would not be an option. You would simply give up and welcome the trip home.
However, if you are Pearl Thomas, and you specifically asked the Lord for ten more years, things are not that simple. Pearl believes that God is truly her Father. She believes that when she asked Him for ten more years to serve Him that is what He will give her! After all isn't that what the Lord said he would do, give a fish instead of a stone?
Now, fighting for a testimony is not the easiest thing to do. There were enormous obstacles to overcome. But, all the ingredients were there for it to be accomplished. We were keenly aware of the fight in the spirit world that needed to take place, as were her daughter, June, and their friend, Madeleine. With each attack from the enemy, these fervent prayer warriors increased the spiritual pressure with fasting and still more intense prayer. There were some very discouraging moments when it appeared that there was no way that the Lord would come through. During those times, it was such an inspiration to hear this precious saint of the Lord, praising Him in her deepest pain.
On November 5th, the Lord made a way for Pearl, who lives in Canada, to have heart-valve surgery in Detroit, Michigan. He also provided one of the top heart surgeons in the country! After the surgery, there were more complications. The doctors had difficulty stopping the bleeding and had to rush her into surgery a second and a third time then a fourth time for other issues. In addition, her kidneys shut down along with her liver. At one point, the doctors only gave her a 5% chance of leaving the hospital. However, they came to see the power of prayer as they witnessed the tide turn as each issue was reversed.
Amazingly, with each crisis, she responded with a firm whispered voice that she had no intention of giving up. Her body was weak, her soul weary, but oh her spirit! That spirit was strong as lye soap and it was fighting against the gates of hell. Pearl wanted to give God glory by giving witness of His love, grace and mercy. She continues her recovery and looks forward to telling you of Abba’s love.
(Ralph is proud to be Pearl’s nephew.)
